In the current language, entropy is mostly understood as a state of expansion, chaos or pure randomness. Negentropy describes the absence of those characteristics and thus, evokes an idea of structure and density. The concept of negENTROPY tries to unite those two notions in order to illustrate how principles like order and disorder or control and the uncontrollable can be closely allied in the artistic process and how they are intentionally used as a working strategy. The exhibition tries to explore on different levels in which ways art works and work processes try to integrate both utterly opposite tendencies.

One of the possibilities lies in the creation of a system or a structure and then undermining the afore created order. The use and combination of contrary elements such as the strict and the free line or the controlled hand exercise and the improvised gesture „from the wrist“ is another way to illustrate a negENTROPic state with traditional materials such as pencil or ink.
In a series of new works, artists experiment with less traditional materials like candle soot, burnt matches or blotting paper whose application implies a moment of uncertainty which has its source in the property of the material itself. Therefore, at the beginning, there has to be a willingness to engage with the new material and to develop ways to work with it.

The idea of a negENTROPic state can also be transfered to the workplace of the artist, the studio. As a space of experimentation. it contains the freely floating creative energies that, at once, manifest themselves through the mere perception of the artist. Sometimes, left overs from other art works are transformed into something wholly new, other times, it can be a stain or an involuntary gesture that turns out to be the mainspring of consequent artistic research.
